Storyworlds as Cognitive and Ontological Concept

Thanks to phenomena such as transmedia storytelling, tranfictionality (=fictional texts expanding, modifying or transposing the world of another text), TV serials dominated by a memorable setting, and online games which turn players into the citizens of a virtual world, the concepts of “world” and its narratological correlate of “storyworld” have  gained new prominence in narratology.  But they remain still ill-defined. In this presentation, taking up a suggestion from Czech narratologist Jírí Koten, I will connect “storyworld”  to two trends in narratology:  the cognitive approach, which regards storyworld as a spatio-temporal totality whose evolution readers or spectators simulate mentally; and the ontological approach, inspired by possible worlds theory, which focuses on the notion of “fictional world,” and regards “worlds” as defined over sets of propositions with mutually compatible truth values, so that a change of truth value creates a different world. To the literary aesthetics inherited from New Criticism that promotes a one-to-one relation between text, world and story I will oppose a currently developing aesthetics of proliferation that implements a wide variety of relations between text, world and story. In conclusion I will discusses the possibility of narration without world creation, and of world-creation without narration, regarding these two improbable cases as  a challenge to capture what it takes to create “worldness” as a lived experience.
