  • für Sprachpraxis
  • für das Studium der Literaturen Großbritanniens, Irlands, der USA, Kanadas sowie Australiens und Neuseelands
  • für das Studium der Sprachwissenschaft und der Mediävistik

Dear Student,

Attending courses is only a small part of the study of English language and literature. The major part consists in reading. You will have to do a great deal of required as well as independent reading. The present list is meant to assist you in choosing from the vast canon of primary and secondary material. It contains study recommendations

  • for Grund- and Hauptstudium
  • for the Zwischenprüfung
  • for language study
  • for linguistics
  • for literature
  • for medieval studies.

We know that there are an awful lot of books out there, and we have therefore divided our recommendations into many smaller sections. We hope that this will help you to see the wood for the trees, and to organize your studies in the best way possible. Partly, our list reflects the particular research and teaching interests of the staff.

So please try to obtain an overview of English language and literature (by consulting, among other things , the specific handbooks) and make your own choice of reading and study topics, depending on your particular motivation and prior knowledge.

We hope that you will enjoy your reading!

Revised: January 2000.

1. Sprachpraxis

Dictionaries and Grammars of English

In your study of English, it is important for you to become familiar with standard reference books on the English language. Here is some basic information, particularly relevant for sprachpraktische Übungen. You should know well, and use frequently, at least

  • one English-German-English dictionary
  • one English-English dictionary (for non-native speakers)
  • one teaching grammar
  • one reference grammar.

And you should also know the range of other reference books available.

1.  Dictionaries ENGLISH-ENGLISH

1.1. Designed For Advanced Learners Of English:

Collins Cobuild English Language Dictionary. Sinclair, J.M. et al. (1987, 2nd ed 1995) New York: HarperCollins.

Significantly different from other dictionaries, since all illustrations of usage are real, attested examples. No rare words, since it is restricted to words which occur fairly frequently. Also shorter students' versions. The 1995 edition is completely revised and based on a corpus of some 200 million words of contemporary English.

Longman Dictionary of American English. Allen, V. et al. (1986) London: Longman.

Easy to understand. For early intermediate to advanced learners.

1.2.  Designed For Native Speakers:

Collins Dictionary of the English Language. 3rd ed. Hanks, P. et al. (1991) New York: HarperCollins.

A traditional British dictionary. Large number of head words, including biographical, geographical entries, etc.

Webster's New World Dictionary of American English. 3rd College Edition. 1988. Simon & Shuster / Pons / Klett.

American English. Lexical explanations are easy enough for a non-native speaker.

If you require detailed historical information, then consult the most famous of them all:

The Oxford English Dictionary. 20 vols, 2nd ed. 1989. Oxford: OUP.

2. Dictionaries: ENGLISH-GERMAN-ENGLISH

Duden-Oxford Großwörterbuch. Clark, M et al. 1991. Duden / OUP.

A major new dictionary. Good on idiomatic usage. Also shorter student versions. The Collins and Langenscheidt dictionaries are also useful.

3. Grammars

Designed for intermediate / advanced learners of English:

Greenbaum, S. & Quirk, R. (1990) A Student's Grammar of the English Language. London: Longman.

Sinclair, J.M. et al. (1990) Collins Cobuild English Grammar. New York: HarperCollins. [Hueber]

All examples of usage are attested in real corpus data. Particularly strong on which words occur in which grammatical constructions.

4. Vocabulary Study

There are many thesauruses. A recommended one is:

Urdang, L. (1991) The Oxford Thesaurus. An A-Z Dictionary of Synonyms. Oxford: OUP.

5. Writing

Sutcliffe, A.J. (1994) The New York Public Library Writer’s Guide to Style and Usage. New York: HarperCollins.

Excellent for punctuation and abbrevations, systems and symbols. Good review of grammar system.

Kane, T.S. (1988) The New Oxford Guide to Writing. Oxford: OUP.

Good book for learning practicing coherent structure organization, strategies and styles of expository writing.

Gibaldi, J. (1998) MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing. MLA Book Publications.

6. Landeskunde

North America:

Wayne, Stephen J. et al. (1995) The Politics of American Government. New York: St.Martin’s Press.

Very good information on American Political institutions, their histories, makeup and workings.

 Canada:

Braun,H. & W. Klooß (1994) Kanada. Eine interdisziplinäre Einführung. Trier: WWT.

2. Literaturwissenschaft

- chronologische Einordnung

- Poesie vs. Prosa

- weltliche vs. geistliche Dichtung / Gattungszugehörigkeit

- regionale Herkunft der Texte.
