For teachers of English, knowing how to teach a foreign language as well as being familiar with the question of how students learn a language is a crucial component in their studies. The field of TEFL addresses these questions by looking into theories of foreign language acquisition and researching central questions in the area of teaching and learning English. Such questions concern analysing learning processes, selecting teaching materials for students or defining learning objectives on the basis of empirical findings. From these findings, implications for teaching English can be derived and used as a common ground for discussion in the seminars to link theory and practice. Because of its practical relevance, foreign language education aims at developing pedagogical and content knowledge to enable students of English to teach effectively and critically evaluate their teaching practices. With that, the ability to reflect and act professionally as a key competence is considered a central component in teacher training.
We also follow an interdisciplinary approach and work together with related sciences such as Linguistics or Psychology. As a research discipline we invite students who are interested in TEFL to expand the field of research e.g. by writing a thesis in a related topic. Our main research topics are teachers’ professional development and studies on facets of effective (foreign) language teaching. Recently, we are also dealing with the question of how trainee teachers of English develop competences to teach with digital resources.
We are currently working on the following projects:
