Welcome to the Department of English Studies

Thank you for your interest in the Department of English Studies at Trier University! On our webpages you will find lots of information about our department, our staff and areas of research, as well as other important and interesting advice.

Teaching staff at our partner universities who are interested in coming to Trier on a Staff Mobility placement, please see this document for further information.

This specific page provides incoming exchange students with the basic material you will need for planning your semester or year abroad with us in the Department of English Studies.

Please note that all of our classes are aimed at students of English or American Studies, i.e. Anglophone literatures, linguistics and cultures. The classes with code numbers 100/200 are introductory courses. All classes with code numbers above 300 and higher require some basic background knowledge.

If you can't find the information you need about the Dept. of English Studies, please feel free to contact our departmental Erasmus+ Student Assistant, Ms Magda Miksch (erasmusangluni-trierde, pictured right), or our departmental Erasmus+ coordinators, Dr Britta Colligs and Ms Laura Witz at erasmusangluni-trierde

With more general questions about studying at Trier University, please contact Ms Kroener (exchangestuduni-trierde) in the University’s International Office.

Incoming Exchange Students

Learning Agreements

Below you will find documents listing the classes which are open to all visiting exchange students, as well information for those who are going to be enrolled at Trier as Master's-level students.

  • You are advised NOT to simply copy classes from the learning agreements of previous exchange candidates in Trier or use class lists from previous semesters: Our classes change every semester and this will lead to unnecessary paperwork with learning agreements and amendment forms.
  • We advise students to take classes worth a total of about 25-30 ECTS credit points each semester (these points can be gained in various subjects; you do not need to collect all of your ECTS points with us in the Dept. of English Studies!).
  • If varying numbers of ECTS credit points are available for a class, the number awarded will depend on the workload and assessment. On your Learning Agreement, list the number of credit points you would like to aquire for the class. You will need to negotiate the workload with the lecturer at the start of the semester.
  • You are encouraged to attend classes taught by a variety of lecturers. It may not be possible to admit you to more than two classes taught by the same lecturer during your time with us.
  • Please ensure that you indicate your language competence in English using the CEFR levels in the appropriate box on your learning agreement; this will enable us to see whether the courses you propose taking are suitable for you. We will not be able to accept your Learning Agreement if this requirement is not fulfilled.
  • Please note that listing courses on your learning agreement does NOT mean you will be automatically registered for and/or accepted into these courses. Please use Trier University's online platfrom PORTA to register for classes during the registration periods listed there (if you already have a Trier University email address), or email the relevant lecturer if you have missed the registration periods.
  • With any questions regarding learning agreements, you may contact Ms Miksch or Dr Colligs. To have the final learning agreement signed, students should contact Ms Kröner or Mr Proost in the International Office.

Classes

These documents list the classes which are open to incoming undergraduate exchange students

Provisional class list for incoming exchange students WS 2023-24.

This document provides information on classes offered at the Master's level:  Information for incoming MA exchange students

Note that these Master’s-level classes all require advanced competence in English - at least C1+ level on the CEFR - as well as previous knowledge/expertise from a Bachelor’s degree in English Studies. You may be asked to provide evidence of your language competence before registering for these classes.

Important points for all Learnng Agreements:

  • Please check the level of English language competence before selecting classes to attend. Most of our classes are aimed at students of English who have reached C1 level of competence on the CEFR. We do not offer any classes suitable for students with language levels lower than B2.
  • On your Learning Agreement, you should list the classes you wish to attend, if there is a space for you. Do not list complete 'modules' that you may find on Porta or other Uni Trier documents, as these consist of multiple classes and different exams: Only classes included in the lists above can be included on Learning Agreements.
  • Please use the code number for the class given in this document (e.g. LANG 201, LING 502) as the "component code".  Check you have entered the correct number of credit points.
  • Participating in a class means attending the weekly lesson, as well as completing the preparation and assessment tasks. All classes meet for 90 minutes once per week. for the duration of one semester. Some classes are listed as having more than one ‘group’, but students only need to attend one group of each class, i.e. one lesson of each class per week. Some classes are repeated in both winter and summer semesters, but students only need to attend one semester's class; none of our classes run for the whole academic year.
  • You should register for classes using the Porta system during the appropriate registration-periods (if you have your Trier University log-in details in time), or email the responsible lecturer to ask to join their class, if you have missed the registration periods. (Please email in English, clearly stating the class title and day/time of the lesson).

    Transcripts

    • Students should contact Ms Magda Miksch (erasmusangl@uni-trier.de) with any questions regarding transcripts of their English Studies classes, and also request a transcript by sending the relevant form (provided by the IO) to her.
    • At the end of each semester, once students have completed all of the required coursework, they should ask all of their instructors to email their grades and awarded credit points for each class to Ms Miksch.
    • The Dept. of English Studies does not pay to send hard copies of transcripts to students’ home universities after they have left Trier, thus all transcripts will be provided electronically by email to the sending institution. If it is necessary for students to receive a hard copy, they should make arrangements with Magda and provide an SAE to enable us to post their transcripts.
    • Students who do not pass the assessment for a certain class may be given a confirmation letter to attest to their attendance. These ECTS credits will not be included on their transcript, but the home universities may choose to award credit for attendance, even if the assessment was not successfully completed.
