The three words are derived from three different sources, all of which have been of the highest importance in the history of English: French, Latin and Germanic. They are used differently:

- royal, 'of a king or queen': the royal family, the royal palaces
- regal, 'fit for a king or queen': regal splendour
- kingly, 'like a king or suitable for a king': his kingly bearing
