Module 23: Real Estate Secretary

• The job adverts in particular are very concise in their wording. No unnecessary details are mentioned. The adverts contain imperatives and not all sentences have a subject. Some of them are therefore grammatically incomplete.
• Real estate adverts do not conform to this pattern. They contain adjectives in order to be descriptive, to supply the reader with details and to create an image of the flat. They aim at being individual and at attracting attention. This is, for instance, to be achieved by using an exclamation mark in one of the ads.
• Job adverts do not have to sell anything - it is usually the applicants who want to "advertise" themselves for a job. They can therefore remain entirely factual and do not contain highly connotated words such as adjectives.
• These differences indicate that the addressees of the adverts are usually not the same people or if they are the same people, they are addressed in different functions: as a future employee or as the buyer of a flat.
