Note that in some cases, one might also form an adjective which is not dissociated from the noun, in analogy to month > monthly. (e.g. kingly, manly, womanly, homely, worldly), but in most cases, the meaning is different, i.e. just in those cases where the form coincides the meaning does not, and the other way round. The word homely, for example, means 'simple and plain' or 'comfortable'. The relationship is still recognisable, but it is different in meaning or use. Note that in the case of king, we have listed three different adjectives, royal, regal and kingly, although there is only one equivalent in German, königlich. What may the reason for English having these three variants, and how are they used?
