Prof. Dr. Christian Soffel

Career

Studies of Sinology, Slavic Studies, Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the LMU Munich.

Dissertation (1999) on the topic "Ein Universalgelehrter verarbeitet das Ende seiner Dynastie – Eine Exegese des Kunxue Jiwen von Wang Yinglin".

Habilitation (2011) on the topic "Vom Alttext/Neutext-Streit zu Zhu Xi: Die Entwicklung der Gelehrsamkeit von Qian Mu".

Prof. Soffel is currently Deputy Chairman of the German Confucian Society and a board member of the European Association of Chinese Studies (EACS). He was also appointed a member of the DFG Review Board 1.16-02 “Asia-Related Sciences” in 2023.

Research Interests

Cultural and intellectual history of China, especially Confucianism from the 12th to the 20th century; traditional Chinese literature; Confucian canon theory; Zhu Xi studies.
