Prof. Dr. Christian Soffel

Career

Studies of Sinology, Slavic Studies, Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the LMU Munich.

Dissertation (1999) on the topic "Ein Universalgelehrter verarbeitet das Ende seiner Dynastie – Eine Exegese des Kunxue Jiwen von Wang Yinglin".

Habilitation (2011) on the topic "Vom Alttext/Neutext-Streit zu Zhu Xi: Die Entwicklung der Gelehrsamkeit von Qian Mu".

Prof. Soffel is currently Secretary of the European Association for Chinese Philosophy, Vice-Chair of the German Confucian Society, and one of the principal investigators in the DFG Research Group Poetry in Transition.

Research Interests

Cultural and intellectual history of China, especially Confucianism from the 12th to the 20th century; traditional Chinese literature; Confucian canon theory; Zhu Xi studies.
