TAPT: International Workshop: „Shifting Crisis Changing Taiwan in a Challenging International Environment“
The project Taiwan as a Pioneer (TAP) invites academics and early career researchers working on related topics to participate in the 5th International Workshop from 23 to 25 September 2026 at Trier University. TAP invites submissions that explore challenges affecting Taiwan (including security threats, energy shortages, tech wars, foreign policy changes, migration etc.) and local responses within Taiwan (climate change responses, innovation technologies, digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, demographic changes).
“TAPT: Current Trends in Teaching and Research on Taiwan” Taiwan as a Pioneer: Local Innovation Amid the Dynamics of Global Megatrends
This year, TAPT is offering an initiative to support emerging scholars in the field of Taiwan studies. The call for applications is open to all students who have studied Taiwan as part of their academic program or who have conducted research on current trends and topics in Taiwan studies, the working-language will be German.
Applications for participation and funding for the workshop “Taiwan as a Pioneer: Local Innovation in the Dynamics of Global Megatrends” on July 3 and 4, 2026, in Trier will be accepted until April 17, 2026.

From September 1–4, 2025, the TAP Team Trier hosted an international workshop on “Taiwan’s Responses to Global Megatrends.”
ISA Convention 2025
From March 2–5, 2025, Dr. Josie-Marie Perkuhn and Felix Brender attended the International Studies Association conference on international relations in Chicago, IL, USA—known as ISA2025 for short. They contributed to the “Global China” panel.

On October 7th 2025, Dr. Josie-Marie Perkuhn attended the 2nd German-Taiwanese Dialogue Platform as a guest.

On July 16, 2025, Dr. Josie-Marie Perkuhn was interviewed by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space (Bundesministerium für Forschung, Technologie und Raumfahrt, short: BMFTR) regarding the collaborative project “Taiwan as a Pioneer.”

Members of the TAP team were invited by the Vienna Center of Taiwan Studies (VCTS) to present their research.
Presenting at 5th Joint Conference NCCU & Trier University in 2025
From 28 to 29 March 2025, TAP members from the University of Trier participated in the interdisciplinary cooperation conference between National Chengchi University and Trier University on “Human Values and Social Transformations in the Age of AI”. Dr Fliß presented “Application of AI and Text Mining in Taiwanese Literature – Exemplified by the Taiwanese Ballad ‘The Great War in Western Europe’”, with a particular focus on marginalised Taiwanese-language literature. Dr Perkuhn presented her findings in “Prolonged by the Challenge of Complexity? Innovation and Participation in Taiwan’s Green Energy Transition”. She also accompanied the delegation on an excursion to Green Island.
