Lecture by Dr Tong Yali on Karl Theodor Stöpel (1862-1940) and his travelogue on Formosa

On Monday 12 June 2023, Dr Tong Yali gave a lecture organised by TAP at Trier University on Karl Theodor Stöpel (1862-1940) and his travelogue on Formosa. She told how she came across Stöpel's travelogue and why it is of important historical significance. She also brought numerous images from the report to illustrate his discoveries.

Dr Tong Yali joined Fu Jen Catholic University's Department of German Language and Culture as an assistant professor in 2019. In 2018, she completed her PhD in Film Studies at Freie Universität Berlin with the dissertation topic: 'Berlin and Shanghai, Women of Modernity: Cinema in the Republic of China and in the Weimar Republic'. Her research areas include film studies, travel records and intercultural and regional studies, her current focus is the Formosa image in German travelogues.
