Why Trier?
Business Administration (BWL) at Trier University offers a scientifically sound, practice-orientated education for future specialists and managers. Research and education are interdisciplinary, empirical and internationally orientated. The focus of business studies is on entrepreneurship, finance, innovation and marketing, human resources and organisation as well as taxation and auditing - topics that are highly relevant for the future-oriented managers of tomorrow. Our graduates can therefore clearly differentiate themselves on the labour market. The Business Administration programme is highly valued as a cooperation partner by partners from business, politics and science.

Renowned research (Made in Trier)
Business administration research at Trier University is empirically orientated, internationally present and relevant to practice. Within the various specialisations, business administration research covers different facets of content and methodology. The research strength of the subject is documented by the top positions in the current research ranking of Wirtschaftswoche. The outstanding positions in the ranking impressively emphasise that excellent business research is conducted in Trier at a high international level.

Internationality
The doors to the world are open to Trier business administration students! Not only can they visit partner universities throughout Europe during their studies, but they can also exchange with students all over the world!
You can gain a wide range of impressions and experiences without losing valuable study time. And the great thing is that our programmes are financially supported!

Flexibility
The course of study can be adapted very flexibly in both the Bachelor's and Master's programmes. Is psychology interesting? Go for it! Or would you prefer business informatics? No problem! In this way, students can tailor their study profile very well to their personal profile. This is rarely the case elsewhere!
The six-semester Bachelor of Science can therefore be organised as General, Interdisciplinary or Quantitative Business Administration. The four-semester Master of Science is also a scientifically sound and international degree programme in General Business Administration or Financial Management with close professional relevance and very good career prospects.

Future orientation
The world is changing rapidly and people are facing huge challenges. From artificial intelligence to sustainability, business administration students learn concepts and evidence-based approaches to tackle these challenges. Examples include the new English-language Master's degree course "Sustainability in Management and Economics", which will be offered from winter semester 2024, research on the robot "Pepper" at the Chair of Management, Organisation and Human Resources or the fundamentals of topics such as machine learning or artificial intelligence at the Chair of Corporate Management in the Master's module "Business Analytics"

Information about the study programme
Overview in figures
The subject of Business Administration is currently represented by ten professorships. In the 2019/2020 winter semester, around 850 students were studying a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. With 231 first-year students, Business Administration is one of the Bachelor's degree programmes with the most first-semester students at Trier University. In addition, around 304 students were enrolled on the various Master's degree programmes in Business Administration in the 2019/2020 winter semester (General Management: 248, Financial Management: 56).
Rankings
Business Administration (BWL) achieved top positions in the CHE ranking with its Master's degree programmes. According to the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE), the study programme comparison is the most comprehensive and detailed ranking of German universities and colleges. Currently, Master's degree programmes in various business and economics subjects have been evaluated.
Trier University's Business Administration programme is represented in the top group in three categories. Top marks were awarded for the organisation of studies, for example. This criterion describes how the courses are coordinated and how open access is for students. The ranking also recognises that Trier Business School is particularly good at supporting its students in the transition to the Master's degree programme. Another top place was awarded in the category of academic publications.
"The fact that we are among the top group in terms of publications per professor is clear evidence of our particular research strength," says Prof Dr Axel Adam-Müller, Chair of Business Administration. "In addition, our efforts to implement a well thought-out and content-rich study concept are bearing fruit, as shown by the very good evaluation of the study organisation and the transition to the Master's programme. At the same time, the results of the ranking are an additional incentive for us to further improve the quality of our research and teaching," adds Axel Adam-Müller.
Internationally positioned with Erasmus, MEST and FFA
As part of the Erasmus programme, Faculty IV currently has a total of 100 exchange places at 52 universities in 21 countries. This results in a very favourable ratio of students to places. Studying abroad can therefore become an integral part of the study programme for a large number of students.
The Master Européen en Sciences du Travail (European Master in Labour Studies) (MEST/EMLS) is a European, non-accredited postgraduate programme that is completed with an additional certificate. As part of the MEST programme, students at Trier University spend a semester or trimester at one of the 13 renowned partner universities (including the London School of Economics).
The current and future jobs of university graduates therefore increasingly require specialised foreign language skills. Since the winter semester 1990/91, Faculty IV Trier has been offering a subject-specific foreign language training programme (FFA) as an additional certificate course in English and French. The subject-specific foreign language training programme is reserved exclusively for students of Faculty IV. It comprises a total of 16 semester hours per week and usually lasts four semesters.
Occupational fields
Our graduates usually find their way into the business world very quickly after graduation, especially with companies in neighbouring Luxembourg. The good career prospects show that our degree programme meets the practical requirements of a modern job profile in a variety of ways. Our students can either take a generalist approach or develop a focused profile by choosing the appropriate specialisation. This gives them the best prospects in numerous sectors, such as management consultancy and human resources, finance and controlling, logistics, marketing or project planning and management - both in Germany and internationally.
Information for pupils
Content of the business studies programme
Our Bachelor's degree programme is interdisciplinary in nature, with joint courses in business administration, economics and sociology. Thanks to the empirically orientated training and independent project studies towards the end of the Bachelor's programme, students can also apply theoretical knowledge to practical cases and real economic data. Our Master's students can either choose a generalist specialisation or develop a focused profile in one of our specialisations.
Requirements
Business Administration is suitable for anyone who is interested in interrelationships in companies. You should be prepared to deal with mathematical problems. A good command of English is also a prerequisite for our students, as many specialised texts are only available in English and lectures are occasionally held in English. Our Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes start in the summer and winter semesters and admissions are generally not restricted. Detailed information on the admission requirements (e.g. grade point average) is listed in the individual degree programmes.
Internships
If you want to study Business Administration, you do not need to have done an internship beforehand. There are also no compulsory internships as part of the degree programme. However, you should endeavour to gain practical experience at an early stage in order to gain an insight into possible professional fields and make contacts. The annual career fair meet held on campus or the student-run management consultancy contact & cooperation at Trier University offer the best conditions for this, as does the proximity to Luxembourg with several hundred thousand jobs, particularly in the banking and insurance sectors.
Stay abroad
Subject-specific foreign language training, a large number of cooperation partners in the Erasmus programme and numerous courses taught in English allow our students to give their studies a strong international focus. The International Office provides support in the search for a suitable stay abroad. Further information can be found here.
Get to know each other days
Together with the other subjects in Faculty IV, Business Studies regularly organises introductory meetings specifically for students. These take place twice a year. The PowerPoint slides from the last meeting in December 2023 can be found here.
The next meeting will take place as part of the general information day at Trier University in the summer. We look forward to seeing you there.
