Over the past decades, the growing geopolitical, economic, and cultural importance of China has led to an increasing interest in Chinese studies as a gateway to a largely unknown language and culture. In the Institute of Sinology at Trier University, both teaching and research are especially focused on change and continuity of Chinese culture between the poles of tradition and modernity and specific problems of an ancient civilization developing into a modern society.
About Our Course of Studies
The main goal of our Bachelor's programme "Modern China Studies" is to convey oral and written communication skills in modern Chinese standard language (called Putonghua or "Mandarin"). In addition, students acquire a broad sinological knowledge especially in the field of contemporary China and also in its history and cultural tradition. This combination of language skills and a solid knowledge of China forms the basis for a receptive intercultural exchange and hence also for a successful cross-cultural dialogue with China. Students of our Master's programme "China - Culture and Communication" achieve high level communication skills in modern Chinese and basic knowledge of classical Chinese language. Thus they are able to understand classical Chinese sources as well as complex modern texts featuring elements of literary Chinese. Furthermore, they attain skills enabling them to analyse, classify, and appraise problems in the fields of modern Chinese linguistics and modern intellectual arguments, while considering developments in the history of ideas.
About Our Research
Main research topics of the Institute of Sinology are pre-modern and contemporary intellectual and cultural history (Prof. Dr. Christian Soffel) as well as modern Chinese linguistics and cross-cultural communication (Prof. Dr. Liang Yong). Trier University frequently exchanges students and researchers with its partner universities in Wuhan, Xiamen, Shanghai, and Taipei for the purpose of academic dialogue.
