Funding criteria for open access monographs and edited volumes

Requirements for authors

  • The publication must have been produced while the author was employed at Trier University. At the time of application, the applicant is employed as a researcher at Trier University and is responsible for paying the publication fees as the author.
  • Authors confirm that they have no third-party funds that can be used to pay the publication fees incurred.

Requirementsfor monographs / edited volumes

  • Funding is available for first publications, i.e., previously unpublished monographs and edited volumes. Upon publication, all elements of the funded publication must be immediately and perpetually accessible to readers around the world without any charge (open access).
  • The publication is made available under a standardized open content license (preferably Creative Commons Attribution CC BY or CC BY SA, although CC BY ND is also an option).
  • The publication appears within 12 months of the application being submitted. Funding can only be guaranteed for up to 12 months to avoid tying up funds for an extended time. After this period, a new funding application can be submitted if necessary.
  • The publication will be listed in the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB).
  • The publication receives a DOI or URN and will be linked to the authors’/editors’ ORCIDs.
  • The funded publication will be published on Trier University’s institutional repository.
  • The funded publication will include a reference to the funding provided by Trier University’s Open Access Publication Fund and the DFG (Funding Acknowledgment). Example: “The publication was funded / supported by the Open Access Fund of Universität Trier and by the German Research Foundation (DFG)”.
  • The publication’s scientific quality must be proven. The publication must undergo a quality assurance procedure recognized in the respective field before it is published (e.g., peer review procedure). The application must include a description of the evaluation process or provide evidence in the form of an external expert opinion.
  • A simultaneous print edition may not be published first but may be published after the open access edition.

Funding / Scope of funding

  • Open Access publication fees for monographs and edited volumes are reimbursed up to 5,000 euros (incl. VAT).
  • Combining the funding with financing from other sources (the author’s cost center) is possible.
  • Only open access fees are eligible for funding. Printing and typesetting costs, administration fees, editing, surcharges for color, size, etc. are not covered.
  • The cost of a simultaneous print edition is not covered.
  • Funding is permissible if a hybrid publication has a single price for both types of publication or if a hybrid publication is not more expensive than an open access publication or a print publication. As proof, comparative prices for the three types of publications are required.
  • Publication funding is subject to the condition that the author receives no private income from a publication funded entirely or partially through budgetary funds. Alternatively, any such income must be allocated to the university.

Requirements for publishers

  • Publications are possible in a publisher/publishing house listed in the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB) or an Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA) member.
  • The publisher must transparently calculate and communicate open access publication costs. The share of open access costs must be indicated separately. To verify this, a checklist must be completed.

Time and mode of application

  • As soon as a concrete contract offer has been received, an application to pay publication fees can be submitted. The date of approval determines the funding order.
  • The application must be submitted before the publishing contract is finalized to ensure that Trier University Library can evaluate both the publishing offer as well as the publisher.
