Am I eligible for the master course? Do I meet all the requirements?

The type and grade of your bachelor course (at least 3.0) is relevant for admission, as well as meeting the language requirements.
We have a document that helps you to evaluate your general eligibility, which you can find here:
https://www.uni-trier.de/fileadmin/fb6/fb6/studium/Master/MSc_ES/Flow_Chart_applicationES_Self_Assessment_2021.pdf

Please see the following link and look at the aforementioned countries:
https://www.uni-trier.de/en/studium/bewerbung/bewerbungsverfahren/application-english-taught-master-programmes/proof-of-english-language-proficiency

Do I need a German language certificate? Do I need to attend preparatory German language courses?

No. Environmental Sciences is entirely taught in English. Proof of German language skills is not necessary.
But of course, international students have the opportunity to learn German on a voluntary basis during their studies free of costs.
Please contact the International Office at Trier University if you want to know more: internationaluni-trierde.

What is the GPA requirement? How does the German grading scale work and how do I convert my foreign grades?

In German universities a 1 to 5 grading scale is used, with 1,0 representing an outstanding achievement and 4,0 being the minimal passing grade.
The Environmental Sciences programme requires an average grade of 3,0 or better according to the German system.

Foreign grades can be converted to German grades using the “Bavarian formula”:

[(G max – GPA) / (G max – G min)] x 3 + 1

G max – maximal grade according to the national grade system or to the official grade system of the home university
G min – minimal passing grade according to the national grade system or to the official grade system of the home university
GPA – grade point average of the Bachelor’s degree

Example of grade translation:

The applicant comes from Belarus, his GPA of the Bachelor’s degree is 8,49.
The maximal grade in Belarus is 10, the minimal passing grade is 1.
[(10-8,49) / (10-1)] x 3 + 1 = (1,51 / 9) x 3 + 1 = 0,1677 x 3 + 1 = 0,5031 + 1 = 1,5
The grade of the Bachelor’s degree according to the German grade system is 1,5.

How many years does the bachelor degree have to be?

Depending on your country, the bachelor programme can vary between 3 or 4 years.
If it is any less than this, please contact the admissions office: admissionuni-trierde

Is the number of students allowed into the programme restricted?

No, there is not limit on the number of students per semester.

When is the deadline for the application?

The M.Sc. Environmental Sciences study programme only starts in the winter semester (for international students) and the application period typically starts in May.
In particular, please note that the application portal is only open during the official application period.
More on important dates for application, registration etc. can be found here: www.dates.uni-trier.de. Please look at the “non-restricted” section.

As an international student, am I allowed to start in the summer semester, or only in the winter semester?

International students can only start in the winter semester.
The course schedule is designed for a start in October of each year and due to different reasons (e.g. visa), we only accept applications for the English-taught Master programmes in the summer semester, if you have German or EU nationality.

How do I apply/where should I apply?

What fees do I have to pay?

All Trier University students are required to pay a fee each semester. This semester fee is not a Tuition fee, but rather supports other elements of student life. The semester fee contributes to the following:

  • that the TUniKa (the student ID card) can be used by all students in public transport as a bus / train ticket (semester ticket)
  • that the canteen food is subsidized for students and therefore remains cheaper
  • that their Student Representative Office (AStA) has the financial means to represent their interests and provide corresponding support services.

The first semester for new students, the semester fee is considered the enrolment fee (Erst-/Neueinschreibung).  A semester fee (Rückmeldung – re-registration) is required for each subsequent semester.

For the exact costs, please see here: https://www.uni-trier.de/index.php?id=19179&L=2

I already have a master degree, do I need to pay additional semester fees?

If you have already completed a Master’s programme and have a degree, you will be required to pay the second Master’s fee of €650 per semester in addition to the semester fee.

Does the university offer scholarships?

No, Trier University itself does not offer any scholarships to fund an entire degree. The main provider for scholarships for international students is the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service).
All questions pertaining to DAAD scholarships should be directed at the DAAD itself: www.daad.de. The DAAD has local offices in most countries around the world.
Please contact the International Office if you need further information: internationaluni-trierde.
