Flood related environmental risk management in the Danube

PARTNER REQUEST

European R&D PartnerSearch

DESCRIPTION:

Aims and goals:

1 Improve existing early warning systems.

2 Contribute to the development of means that lead to reduction of flood related pollution.

3 Contribute to the development of means that lead to minimization of damages caused by floods, with particular emphasis on sustainable riparian land use and flood plains. 4 Combine (1), (2) and (3) in the attempt to best serve the end-users by modelling various scenarios.

Preliminary project titles:

Priority Area 1:Sensoring and Monitoring

Development of sensors for rapid detection of hazards from floods which may lead to the development of risks with respect to: 1. Chemical hazards 2. Sedimentation (transport and remobilisation) 3. Groundwater contamination 4. Hydrobiological problems (e.g., fish kill, species extinction, reduction of biodiversity) 5. Hygenical

problems (pathogens, epidemics)

- Fast Bio-monitoring - Bio-monitoring using online-sensors - Development of sensors for rapid detection of environmental hazards for floods - Determination of the hygienic situation using real-time PCA - Rapid measurement methods for polar contaminants with instrumental and sensor-based methods - Rapid Bio-monitoring by virtual organisms - Contaminant remobilization in the Tisza Basin and the influence on human health - Bio-monitoring of the Danube River and water-related environmental risk management

Priority Area 2: Transfer, Evaluation and Management of Data

Quality assessment and assurance of data

Data extraction, standardization, and transfer via web

Concept and implementation of energy-independent and

failure-safe monitoring system

Independent data distribution system that is not dependent on public systems or energy, catastrophe-enabled

Extended dada base on acquisition and parametrisation of waters ecological function parameters

Priority Area 3: Evaluation of Information, and Modelling

- Knowledge-based forecast model for flood and pollution, focusing on existing scenarios

- Using GIS and remote-sensing methods as tools in order to further evaluate impacts of flooding in the whole Danube Watershed

- Application of prediction-models during crisis-management with hard-time restrictions

- Pollutant dispersion in rivers with strong heterogeneity

- Risk assessment of infiltration systems

- Modelling transport and degradation of pollutants

- Modelling and optimisation of point-sources of WWTP and sewer systems in flood events, focusing on particular substance

- Rapid forecasting as a part of a river modelling tool

- Flood forecasting and routing, rainfall runoff modelling

- Water quality modelling

- Instationary flooding processes outside of the original

river area

- Risk management and damage assessment at the surface

water-groundwater interface

- Flood forecasting and flood defence strategy evaluation

- Rigorous error estimates and online calibration of transient models for flood routing and pollution transport

- Modelling of the generation and movement of superficial landslides, detrital flow, and fast-flowing mudslides
