Computer Ethics: Privacy in the Information Society

 

The individual‚s right to privacy, a right that is explicitly recognized in several international treatises and which has served as the basis for social life since the 17th century, is being altered as a result of the technological changes which are taking place in the computer revolution and information society. Privacy-- often defined as the interest the individual has in sustaining personal space free from interference by other people and organizations-- has several dimensions to it: [a] Privacy of Personal Behavior relating to sexual, religious and cultural activities as well as to shopping habits or media habits; [b] Privacy of Personal Communications, which refers to various forms of communication including in recent years cellular phones and e-mails; wireless etc.[c] Privacy of Personal Data (information privacy) pertaining to various types of data such as medical data, and financial records that are stored within the conte
