Contemporary Human Geography (Master of Arts, 1-subject)

The master's degree in Contemporary Human Geography (M.Sc.) is offered as a 1-subject degree by the Department of Geography. It follows an undergraduate degree as a consecutive master’s degree.

The program, offered in English, is aimed at prospective students with a relevant bachelor’s degree or an equivalent degree who wish to study human and tourism geography in depth.

From the second semester onwards, students can choose between two fields of study: Space, Power & Change, which focuses on social change and human-environment relationships, or Tourism & Leisure, which offers a critical examination of tourism geography. In the compulsory elective area, they can gain in-depth insights into Professional Development in Human Geography (I) or Tourism Geography (II), depending on their focus, and specialize further in the university elective area. An academically supervised work internship further provides practical experience.

In the course of their studies, graduates acquire sound specialist knowledge in dealing with socially relevant human geography issues, expand their methodological skills and strengthen their social and personal skills.

The degree program qualifies them for a wide range of career prospects, including regional and location development, sustainability and transformation consulting, spatial planning, activities in the tourism and leisure sector, climate protection management and university and non-university research.
