German universities often offer two ways of submitting a PhD thesis: As a single monograph, or as a collection of individually published, peer-reviewed papers (i.e., a compilation thesis). Compilation theses offer certain advantages, but their completion can be less predictable, and may require a different “style” of working. In addition, not every project may be suitable for a compilation thesis. Thus, PhD students face a difficult choice, especially at the start of their project. This presentation will address the pros and cons of compilation theses and provide guidelines for making an informed decision.
