Application and Admission for short term students ("FreeMover")

You can study at Trier University as a short-term student ("FreeMover") for a maximum of 2 semesters, provided that you are enrolled at another university abroad. To be admitted as a FreeMover, apply within the regular application deadlines by registering in the application portal PORTA and submitting all required documents by post to the Admissions Office by the deadline.

Application Documents

You must submit the following application documents:

  • Application form for enrolment (printout from PORTA). You will find the application form in the application portal PORTA as soon as you have registered and logged in. Sign the application form and add the handwritten note "Freemover".
  • Officially certified copy of all pages of the school and/or university transcripts, including the overview of subjects and grades and their officially certified translation in German or English
  • Proof of payment of the evaluation fee, unless the certificate is from Germany or Luxembourg
  • Certificate of enrolment from the home university
  • Copy of passport
  • Proof of health insurance
  • Bank deposit slip or copy of the account statement for the enrolment fee
  • German language certificate B1: German-speaking applicants from countries such as Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Austria, Belgium and Switzerland (each from the German-speaking part of the country) are exempt from this requirement.
  • DIN A4 envelope, sufficiently stamped (https://shop.deutschepost.de) and addressed to you

After all application documents have been checked for completeness, the Admissions Office will send the enrolment documents, e.g. your TUNIKA and ZIMK ID, to the address you have entered in the applicant portal PORTA.

Semester Fee

No tuition fees are charged at Trier University. However, all students pay a semester fee, which is used, among other things, to support student representation and to subsidise canteen meals. The largest part of the semester contribution goes towards the semester ticket, as the student ID card is also a bus and train ticket.

Please note:
Do not under any circumstances pay the semester fee when applying! Only the evaluation fee is due here. You will only receive a request to pay the semester fee for enrolment when you are admitted.
