Study abroad

General Information

Go abroad!

Broadening your professional horizons, getting to know a new country and its people intensively, mastering personal challenges, acquiring important qualifications for the job market and becoming really fit in a foreign language – all this is offered by a stay abroad during your studies.

As the following pages will show you, there are many ways to do this, including not only one- or two-semester study stays, but also numerous offers for shorter periods, such as summer courses or internships.

In general, there are the following ways to realize a stay abroad during your studies at Trier University:

1. Through exchange programmes at Trier University (e.g. ERASMUS+, ISEP or direct exchange with individual partner universities)

Application instructions and forms for these programmes are usually available five to six weeks before the application deadline at: www.ins-ausland-downloads.uni-trier.de.
Through the cross-border network of the University of the Greater Region (UniGR), students of Trier University can also benefit from the (teaching) offers of 5 partner universities in the region (B, D, F, L): www.uni-trier.de/international/universitaet-der-grossregion.

2. Through generally advertised scholarship programmes of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and other organisations

The most important of these programmes are also listed on our websites. In contrast to university-specific exchange programmes, the host institution can often be freely chosen in these programmes; however, this also means that you organise your stay largely on your own. Detailed information can be found in the DAAD brochure "Mit Stipendium ins Ausland Schritt für Schritt erklärt" (Step-by-Step Guide to Scholarships Abroad) and in the DAAD Scholarship Database (www.auslandsstipendien.de).

3. Through your own organisation

You also have the option of organising your stay abroad yourself, independently of the exchange and scholarship programmes listed here. If you would like to enrol for a semester or a year as a "visiting student" or even for an entire degree programme at a higher education institution abroad, you should enquire at an early stage about the admission requirements and formalities at the higher education institution(s) on your shortlist.
Helpful sources of information can also be found at www.studieren-weltweit.de.

In general

It is important to plan your stay abroad early – it is best to start at least one to one and a half years before your planned departure date. Depending on your course of study and your plans, this may mean that you need to get more information already in your first semester!

Stay up to date

Visit our website regularly. We also announce current announcements via the university's e-mail distribution list (Internal Mitteilungen) and on the notice boards of the International Office in the V-Building. If possible, you should clarify the question of the recognition of study achievements abroad with the responsible subject representatives before departure.

Timing of the stay abroad

In principle, a stay abroad is possible at any stage of your studies. In the case of exchange and scholarship programmes, a minimum of one to two years of study at the home university is generally required before beginning the stay abroad. In Bachelor's and Master's programmes, a specific semester or academic year is often particularly recommended for a stay abroad – please inquire about this with the departmental student advisor or the ERASMUS+ coordinators of the respective subject.

Language tests

As a rule, you need proof of sufficient knowledge of the respective country's language or the language of instruction for a study period abroad. The Language Center offers group tests in English, French and Spanish several times a year for this purpose. Further information can be found here and in the application instructions for the respective exchange programmes.
