After more than 13 years on X/Twitter, Trier University is withdrawing from the platform.

The presidium of Trier University also supported the campaign. Chancellor Dr. Ulrike Graßnick explained the decision: “Trier University is a place for free science and it stands for a democratic discourse. On X, however, we saw an increase in right-wing extremist and populist content, fake news and discrimination. Continuing our activities on X is not compatible with our values.”

As one of over 60 German-speaking institutions, the University of Trier is underlining its commitment to fact-based communication and against anti-democratic dynamics. From the perspective of those involved, the values that promote diversity, freedom and science are no longer present on the platform.

Trier University continues to be available for constructive, critical and open dialogue with all interested parties via its numerous other communication channels, including its most recent addition Bluesky, a decentralized social media platform.
