Enrolment at Trier University

First steps

1. Choose a course that you would like to attend (PORTA course catalogues)

2. Contact the respective lecturers at Trier University and enquire whether it is possible for you to attend the chosen course (if you have any questions, please contact the UniGR advisor) - at this point, please also clarify with your home university whether the corresponding module will be recognised for your studies. The Learning Agreement can be helpful here.

3. Start the registration and enrolment process in the application portal on PORTA.

4. Enrol for your desired courses!

Registration and enrolment via PORTA

You will need the following documents during the application and enrolment process:

  • Current certificate of enrolment from your home university
  • Copy of your identity card
  • Certificate of health insurance cover
  • Passport photo
  • Proof of payment of the fees for the student ID card (TUNIKA): 22 EUR

After entering your registration, you will receive a confirmation link to confirm your e-mail address and activate your account. Now you can log in to PORTA with your user name from the e-mail and the password you have set and start the application process. After entering your personal data, you will be asked for your degree and subject. In any case, please enter: ‘No degree’ (Abschluss/degree) and UniGR (Subject/Fach) (Attention: This also applies to Theatre Studies!), so that it looks like this:

Online-Enrolment

After applying, you can start the online enrolment process. You will then be guided through the system until you are asked to upload the above-mentioned documents. If you do not yet have all the documents ready, you can save the application process at any time and continue later. As soon as you have all the documents - including the insurance certificate (students without German insurance always enter ‘exempt’ and upload the insurance certificate from their insurance company later anyway) and confirmation of fee payment - you can complete the enrolment process.

You will then receive a notification. You will receive your documents (login and TUNIKA) by post. (In exceptional cases, the documents must be collected from the Student Information Centre. If this is the case, you will be notified). Therefore, please provide a home address!

Register for courses via PORTA

You can register for courses online via the PORTA portal. After your successful enrolment at Trier University, you will receive a so-called ZIMK ID. Use this ID to log in to PORTA and then select the courses you would like to attend either by searching for courses or via the course catalogue.

Please note: If you would like to have courses from partner universities recognised at your home university, you must conclude a Learning Agreement in advance. This is the only way to be entitled to recognition.

Exams and registration for examinations

As a rule, an examination can consist of a written examination, a term paper, an oral examination or similar, or a combination of these. Separate registration is mandatory and does not take place automatically when registering for the course!

Students of the UniGR network must register directly with the lecturers of the course. We recommend that you clarify the examination and registration details (registration deadline, time, form, scope and duration of the examination to be taken, other formalities, etc.) with the lecturer of the respective course at an early stage and in person in order to avoid misunderstandings!

After successfully passing the examination, please ask the respective lecturer to send your grade/performance record to the respective ECTS/subject coordinator - they can then issue you with a transcript of records

Notes on re-registration

For those who were already enrolled as UniGR students at Trier University in the previous semester, the following applies: Please send the current certificate of enrolment from your home university as a pdf document with the subject line ‘UniGR re-registration’ to the Registrar's Office (stusek@uni-trier.de), please cc to unigr@uni-trier.de.

"Outgoings"

Are you studying at Trier University and interested in visiting one of the universities in the Greater Region? Students at Trier University can enrol with UniGR student status at one (or more) partner university (Liège/Liège, Luxembourg, Lorraine/Lorraine, Saarland University, RPTU and htw saar) and attend courses there in parallel to their studies at Trier University.

Enrolment at partner universities

In short: Advantages

UniGR student status is open to enrolled students of all subjects at the University of Trier. UniGR student status enables students to take advantage of numerous benefits at the University of the Greater Region: attend courses and take examinations there, have up to 10 ECTS per semester recognised for their own studies at their home university, borrow books free of charge or eat at reduced prices in the canteens. There are no additional enrolment fees for this.

Choice of partner university and courses

First of all, you should familiarise yourself with the different locations and course offerings. Please also note the different academic calendars - there are major differences, especially in the summer semester. You can find an overview here

Enrolment the partner universities

The enrolment processes at the individual universities may differ. Please find out here what the procedure is at your preferred location. If you have any questions, please contact the UniGR advisor in Trier and/or on site.

Preparation: Learning Agreement

If you would like to have courses at the partner universities recognised at your home university, you must conclude a Learning Agreement in advance. This is the only way to be entitled to recognition. To do this, please contact your respective ECTS/subject coordinator at Trier University and clarify any questions regarding recognition in advance. Please note: If you would like to have courses at a partner university recognised for the free elective area (Freier Wahlbereich), the principle of equivalence of modules also applies (i.e. a course at a partner university should replace a specific module on the module list in the free elective area).

Recognition of examinations

To have your examinations recognised, have them officially confirmed or have a transcript of records issued. You can then have this recognised by your ECTS/subject coordinators after your return.
