Entry requirements and visa

Depending on your citizenship, you may be subject to visa regulations when entering the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesrepublik Deutschland – BRD). Please consult a German diplomatic agency or consular post in your home country on entry and residence regulations.

 

No visa requirement

Citizens from countries that belong to the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EWR) or from Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, South Korea, New Zealand, Switzerland or the USA do not need a visa to enter Germany.

 

Visa requirement

If you are a citizen from a different country, you will need a visa that allows you to enter Germany. You can apply for a visa at a German diplomatic agency or consular post in your home country. Please be aware that the issuance of a visa may take several weeks and that you thus need to plan in enough time.

Enrolment for doctoral studies at Trier University

In order to enrol at Trier University for doctoral studies you need to have a visa for doctoral studies in Germany. Please apply for the visa at your local German diplomatic agency or consular post. Besides various other documents, you will need to present an admission letter by Trier University.

Employment or research period at Trier University

If you will be employed or spend a research period at Trier University you need to have a visa to enter Germany.  Please apply for the visa at your local German diplomatic agency or consular post. Depending on the length of your stay in Germany, you may either need to apply for a “Schengen” visa (duration of stay up to three months) or a national visa (duration of stay over three months). Please note that only the national visa can be changed into a longer residence permit at a later time.
