The search for accommodation is an important step before starting your trip to Trier.
The earlier you start looking, the better your chance is to find the right place. The housing market can be a little challenging in Trier, especially before the beginning of the semester it is not easy to find accommodation. But the housing market usually cools down soon afterwards.
Please note that your student-ID card (Tunika) is also a bus and train ticket, so you might also look for housing in the (usually cheaper) outskirts of town.
Furthermore, you should be aware of two specifics concerning the German housing market: firstly, most rooms/apartments in the private housing market are unfurnished (contrary to the student dormitories of Trier University and several privately operated student dormitories). Secondly, rent in the private housing market does not include utility costs such as water, electricity or gas. And finally, searching in the private housing market may involve additional fees such as real estate agent fees, etc. The following list of abbreviations will help you understand the common terms that are used.
