How do I use PORTA?

PORTA is Trier University’s online portal system, where your personal account accompanies you throughout your studies from the moment you apply and enrol at Trier University. PORTA serves a number of functions during your studies. We highlight the most important and commonly used functions that you will use here.


Registering or deregistering for courses/lectures

Instructions: Registering for or deregistering from courses /lectures with open registration

  1. After logging in, in the menu under “My studies” select "Exam and course enrolment (Planner of Studies)”. There you will see the degree programme(s) in which you are currently enrolled. 
  2. To register for a course/lecture, choose the lecture you want by clicking on the title of the lecture.
  3. If you only want to see the lectures available, you can hide the exams (this step is recommended).
  4. If you then select "Expand all", all the courses/lectures in the degree programme, each of which is assigned to a module, will be displayed: Courses that are offered in the current semester can be recognized by the fact that the date, location and lecturer are displayed. Courses/lectures not available in that semester will not have this information posted.
  5. Courses/lectures in which you can register can be recognized by the apply button. For lectures, where the registration button is not available, indicate that the course is taking place, however, the registration period has either not yet started or has already ended or no registration period has been selected by the department. The registration deadlines are shown on the detailed view (click on the course/lecture title).
  6. After registering, you will receive confirmation that you have been admitted to the course/lecture in the case of open registration: If you now select "Back to overview", this status will also be displayed in your semester schedule.
  7. You can also select "Sign off" from the list of all courses as well as from your study planner. You will then be asked again to confirm the deregistration and you will receive the confirmation that you are deregistered from the course.

Instructions: Registering for courses/lectures with parallel groups and assigned lecture groups

  1. After logging in, in the menu under “My studies” select "Exam and course enrolment (Planner of Studies)”.  There you will see the degree programme(s) in which you are currently enrolled. 
  2. To register for a course/lecture, choose the lecture you want by clicking on the title of the course/lecture.
  3. If you only want to see the courses/lectures, you can hide the exams (this step is recommended).
  4. If you then select "Expand all", all the courses/lectures in the degree programme, each of which is assigned to a module, will be displayed: Courses that are offered in the current semester can be recognized by the fact that the date, location and lecturer are displayed. Courses/lectures not available in that semester will not have this information posted.
  5. To register for a course with several parallel groups, click on the button "Apply". You will be shown all parallel groups for the course and you have to choose with a priority ranking which group(s) you would like to register in. Please select at least two priorities.
  6. When you have made your selection, confirm it by selecting "Apply now". You will then receive an overview of your registrations.
  7. The button "Back to overview" will take you back to the study planner, which will also show you the current status (registered): As soon as places have been allocated in the course, the changed status (admitted, rejected or cancelled) is shown at this point. Likewise, the status of the registrations can be checked in the timetable (My Studies/Schedule) or your enrolments (My Studies/Show my enrolments).
  8. Via the list of all courses or also via your semester schedule you can select "Sign Off" in order to change the priority ranking. Once you have been admitted to the course/lecture section, you can also deregister from the other lecture sections here.
