Data Science (Master of Science, 1-subject)

The Data Science programme is a research-oriented course of study that provides in-depth knowledge in the areas of computer science, mathematics and statistics relevant to Data Science. The strong interdisciplinary orientation provide a broad knowledge of the field, learning how to approach problems from different angles and able to adapt to the rapidly changing demands in the field.

Admission in summer semester is possible. However, beginning in the winter semester is optimal, based on the programme design.

A single-subject master’s degree programme has a standard period of study of four semesters.

The subject examination regulations regulate the purpose, content and procedure of the examinations and are legally binding. If you have specific questions about a particular examination, you should contact your examiner (or academic advisor).   Questions regarding the process, organisation and registration for the examination should be directed to the Examination office (HPA).

The module descriptions stipulate the examination regulations and requirements for the module and provide information on the content of the modules as well as the learning objectives and competencies to be acquired.

Application and Admission

§ 2 Admission requirements and recommended basic knowledge

In addition to the admission requirements set out in § 2 general subject examination regulations for masters degree (in german), the following admission requirements apply to the master’s degree programme in Data Science (1-subject):

1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree

a) in Computer Science, Business Informatics, Mathematics, Business Mathematics, Statistics or Economics with a grade of 1.7 or better or

b) in a related subject with a grade of 1.4 or better. The decision on equivalence in accordance with sentence 1 is made by the Examination Board on a case-by-case basis.

In the case of a Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree in computer science, business informatics, mathematics, business mathematics or economics with a grade between 1.8 and 2.2 and in the case of a Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree in a related subject with a grade between 1.5 and 1.9, the Examination Board decides on admission on a case-by-case basis on the basis of criteria previously decided and announced by the Examination Board.

2. proof of knowledge of the English language in accordance with § 4 paragraph 2 of the enrolment regulations of Trier University (in german).

3. submission of a letter of motivation.

Internship

An internship is not compulsory but can be completed as part of Module 6 ‘Professional Orientation’.

Nevertheless, it is recommended to make contact with employers through internships at an early stage and get to know the future working world. The university supports internships in Germany and abroad through Career Services by providing information and internships offers.

Stay abroad

A study/stay abroad is not compulsory but is recommended. The mobility window is in the 3rd semester, but a stay abroad can also take place in other semesters.
