FAQs PROMOS program at Trier University
Who can apply?
Die Auslandsstipendien werden auf der Basis der Richtlinien des DAAD aufgrund fachlicher Qualifikation und persönlicher Eignung vergeben.
Scholarships abroad are awarded on the basis of the DAAD guidelines on the basis of professional qualifications and personal suitability.
Students enrolled at Trier University with the aim of obtaining a degree can apply. Foreign students can also apply (stays in the home country are excluded).
What documents do I have to submit?
Various documents must be submitted for the individual funding opportunities, which can be found in the application instructions.
Where do I have to submit my documents?
Please send documents in pdf format only by e-mail to promosuni-trierde
Can I still submit my documents after the application deadline?
No. Only applications that have been submitted in full by the application deadline can be included in the selection process! Only in the case of assessments is it possible to submit this document after the application deadline if this has already been requested from the assessor before the deadline. Please make sure that you apply for the evaluation report, the language test and, if applicable, the Learning Agreement in good time. Please bear in mind that the assessors also need time to prepare the reports and allow sufficient time for this.
What are the chances of receiving PROMOS funding?
PROMOS is a competitive merit-based scholarship. For this reason, there are no guarantees that the scholarship will be awarded. However, we strongly recommend that you apply.
How good do my grades have to be?
As PROMOS is a merit-based scholarship, good grades are of course a decisive selection factor. But your academic results are
not the only decisive criterion. It is not possible to make a general statement about a gradesa average.
Can individual documents from my previous application, e.g. for a study place, be retrieved and assigned by the International Office for the PROMOS application?
No, we ask for your understanding that no documents from previous applications can be retrieved for the PROMOS application. The results of the language tests are an exception: If you have already taken a language test at the Language Center a few months ago, please let us know the date on which you took the test when you submit your application.
I am a foreign language student, do I have to take a language test for the PROMOS application?
If, as part of your planned stay abroad, you are going to a country where the language of instruction/work is a language that you are also studying at Trier University, you do not need to take a separate language test for the Promos application. When submitting the overview of the courses you have attended, you also indicate which practical language exercises you have taken and what you have achieved there. This is sufficient for the PROMOS application.
However, if you are applying for an exchange place at the same time, please note the documents required for this, which may also require special language certificates from students of foreign language philology (e.g. TOEFL test).
Where can I take a language test?
The Language Center offers tests for English, French and Spanish at regular intervals, the dates of which can be found on the Language Center website (sprachenzentrum.uni-trier.de).
Please note: The results of the language tests at the Language Center are sent to the International Office collectively, you do not have to worry about receiving your results on time as part of your PROMOS application! However, you can only take tests for the PROMOS application if they are before the application deadline.
Please be sure to indicate the test date on the application form.
For language certificates in other languages, please contact the language lecturers or lecturers of the relevant foreign language departments at Trier University in good time. Please use the form provided for the preparation of language certificates by language lecturers/lecturers. Language skills in languages that are not taught at Trier University can also be proven by suitable certificates of participation in language courses.
Students of foreign language philology: no language test is required if you have completed the practical language courses in the relevant language and submitted the results.
How long is my language test valid?
To apply for a PROMOS scholarship, you can submit language certificates that are no more than one year old.
Who can/should write me an assessment?
If you are applying for a PROMOS scholarship, the review should come from a professor or a member of staff with a doctorate and a permanent position in one of the subjects you are studying.
Tip: If possible, also submit your PROMOS application documents (letter of motivation, CV, overview of grades) to the assessors - this will give them as comprehensive a picture of you as possible or you can present your plans in a personal interview.
How does my report reach the International Office?
The reviewers are requested to send the review in a sealed envelope to the International Office, attn. Mr. Proost, or to send it as an attachment in pdf format to promos@uni-trier.de via the official e-mail address.
The reports should not be given to applicants.
When are the application deadlines? What is the right application deadline for me?
PROMOS for self-organized stays is always announced in two selection rounds: November for a stay starting in January of the following year and May for a stay starting in June of the same year.
In principle, you can also apply a whole year in advance, provided that the stay has already been agreed with the host institution.
Please note that only applications that are complete by the application deadline can be considered in the selection process.
Stays within the framework of the partnership programs of Trier University have separate deadlines and the application for PROMOS runs parallel to the application for the study place.
What selection procedure is there and what selection criteria are used?
The internal university selection is made on the basis of the written documents submitted. Decisive selection criteria are
- previous academic achievements
- quality and relevance of the intended stay abroad in relation to the current degree program
- expert assessment
- existing language skills that are necessary to carry out the stay
- preparation of the stay abroad (study/internship plan, in the case of internships, confirmation from the internship employer about the internship position, agreements on recognition of academic achievements at Trier University)
- commitment outside your studies (e.g. in political, social, cultural or intercultural areas)
Can I combine different types of funding?
PROMOS & PROMOS
In principle, PROMOS scholarships can be combined, but the total funding period within a period of study (which ends with the completion of a Bachelor's, Master's, Diplom, Magister, state examination, etc.) may not exceed six months. Students can also receive PROMOS funding again at the same German university within a new period of study.
ERASMUS & PROMOS
ERASMUS and PROMOS funding cannot be obtained at the same time. In the case of existing ERASMUS cooperations with foreign universities, funding for semester scholarships in these subject areas is generally not possible within the framework of PROMOS. However, if a cooperation only exists for a specific subject area (or exclusively for teacher mobility), PROMOS funding for another subject area (or also for student mobility) is possible in exceptional cases. In exceptional cases, funding is also possible if the ERASMUS quota of a department has been exhausted. If students are funded via PROMOS in these exceptional cases, it is necessary to apply for a new ERASMUS cooperation (or an extension of the existing cooperation agreement or an increase in the exchange quota) with the host university in the following year. The rejection of the new or modified cooperation by the host university must be documented in written correspondence and kept for review. If a further ERASMUS stay is ruled out for students due to previous ERASMUS funding, PROMOS funding is possible. Internships funded by PROMOS scholarships are not possible in the ERASMUS area (also no funding for less than three months). The only exception is for students who cannot receive further ERASMUS internship funding due to an internship already funded by ERASMUS. In this case, the lower limit of six weeks also applies to internship funding in the ERASMUS area.
DAAD Individual Scholarships & PROMOS
DAAD individual scholarships and PROMOS may not be claimed at the same time.
BAföG benefits & PROMOS
Students must declare the PROMOS funding to the Auslandsbafög office. If you are receiving Auslandsbafög, you are only entitled to a credit of EUR 300 (for the monthly partial scholarship installment). The travel allowance is offset in full against the travel allowance from the Auslandsbafög. The BAföG offices are always responsible for offsetting against the benefits of the Auslandsbafög and students must declare all income (including PROMOS funding).
Other scholarships from other institutions
In the case of scholarships from other scholarship providers, a combination of scholarships from private funds with PROMOS scholarships is possible (here too, however, the university can set a restriction or exclude a PROMOS scholarship). There is also no problem with public funding if it does not support the stay abroad. If the stay abroad is also supported by public funds, the purpose of the funding is generally decisive: Residency funding (e.g. the PROMOS partial scholarship installment) or travel costs. The same funding purpose may not be funded from public funds. This means that PROMOS funding may not be used if the same funding purpose is already being pursued with public funds. Students must also declare the PROMOS funding to the other scholarship provider.
Deutschlandstipendien and PROMOS
The Deutschlandstipendium and PROMOS scholarships can be received at the same time.
Paid work abroad
It is not mandatory to take into account any remuneration received during the stay abroad. However, remunerated activities may only be carried out during the scholarship period with the university's consent. The purpose of the funded stay abroad must not be jeopardized by the activity. During the scholarship period, remunerated activities may be carried out with the approval of the university. If you are planning to do this, please contact us.
Can I receive PROMOS funding more than once?
In principle, PROMOS scholarships can be combined, but the total funding period within a period of study (which ends with the completion of the Bachelor's, Master's, state examination, etc.) may not exceed six months. Students can also receive PROMOS funding again at the same university within a new study period.
Can I also be offered an internship or a place to study abroad as part of the PROMOS program?
No, unfortunately this is not possible.
When can I expect a decision?
The decision on the application documents for the invitation to tender with a deadline at the beginning of November is expected to be made in mid-December. The decision on the application documents for the invitation to tender with a deadline at the beginning of May is expected to be made in mid-June.
