Studying & practical experience

It may not always be apparent on how a degree programme can be applied to the working world. In humanities courses in particular, the focus is on imparting knowledge and acquiring analytical skills. As a student, it is therefore important to explore the working world and gain practical experience while you are still studying. This can not only promote learning success, but also open up new perspectives and facilitate the transition to professional life.

In addition to internships (mandatory or voluntary), volunteer work, student job positions and apprenticeships are also a good way to explore future career possibilities.

Internships before starting your studies

At Trier University there are currently no degree programmes that require an internship before starting your studies.

Nevertheless, it can be helpful and useful for your own study decision to do an internship between graduating from your A-levels/high school and starting your studies. Family and friends, possibly also teachers or the employment agency, can be helpful in finding an internship.

You can also find internship-like opportunities such as “work & travel” on relevant websites. And participating in a national volunteer programme can also be a helpful factor in your decision about which degree programme to pursue.

Internships in bachelor's/master's programmes

You can find out whether your degree programme requires an internship in the examination regulations for your degree programme. However, even if an internship is not required, gaining practical experience during your studies is still a good idea. If the internship lasts longer than a few weeks or takes place during your semester, you can apply for a semester of leave  at the Registrar’s/Admission Office.
